During a raid by French-speaking agents of the Special Forces (DSU) in September, Yannick Verdyck was shot dead in Merksem. "French-speaking agents of the DSU have been deployed dozens of times in Flanders in recent years," says Vlaams Belang group leader in the Chamber Barbara Pas (Vlaams Belang), who questioned Minister of the Interior Annelies Verlinden (cd&v) about this.

The way in which the raid at Verdyck happened in September provoked a lot of commotion. "For example, just before he was shot, the man was shouted 'Ta gueule!' in French," pas said. That a gold dealer in Antwerp who suddenly sees masked and armed men at his bedside at night who shout at him in French, does not immediately think of agents, is not unthinkable." Minister Verlinden's answer now shows that the French-speaking regional units of the DSU were deployed no less than 58 times in Flanders between 1 October 2018 and 20 October 2022. "For Minister Verlinden, that is apparently no problem at all, because 'the special units give the reminders in the language of the language region', and 'every member receives a bilingual training to know the necessary terminology when intervening in both national languages'", Pas continues. "So either 'ta gueule!' is correct Dutch, or Merksem is located in Wallonia, or dutch ignorant or dutch unwilling agents are deployed in Flanders. And this with the known results as a result." Vlaams Belang is certainly not happy with this state of affairs. "In Flanders there is only one working language, and that is Dutch," pas concludes. "Agents who cannot or do not want to speak Dutch have no business here."
