"This is a battle that comes from below and reiterates that we must abolish free internships because with free internships you don't pay rent." During an Instagram live broadcast, Elly Schlein, secretary of the Democratic Party, relaunched the debate on the need to abolish unpaid internships in Italy, highlighting how the latter represent a form of precariousness that does not allow young people to support themselves adequately.

An issue that is talked about too little, on the contrary, that the right has practically – and deliberately – taken off all the radars, but which affects the lives of many young people.  The live broadcast was attended by Chiara Gribaudo, vice president of the labor commission and the first signatory of a bill aimed at making internship pay mandatory. Gribaudo highlighted the importance of legislation that not only guarantees compensation for interns but also introduces greater transparency on the number of active internships in Italy. The bill presented by Gribaudo, currently awaiting scheduling in the Chamber of Deputies' labor committee, aims to regulate extracurricular internships and make their remuneration mandatory. Gribaudo emphasized the importance of this measure: "Where there is a grey area, precariousness and poor work lurk even more." This is well known by the many young people who struggle to have a dignified and independent life and who were represented at the event organized by the Democratic Party by Arianna Curti and Pietro Galeone of the Young Democrats, who expressed their support for the bill, underlining how precariousness impacts especially on the new generations, leaving them in a state of prolonged professional uncertainty. A paid and transparent internship also means greater certainty and planning possibilities. In fact, Secretary Schlein recalled how job insecurity can only directly affect broader social issues such as the declining birth rate in the country: "To combat the birth rate, you have to fight precariousness at its roots." According to the secretary of the Democratic Party, the prescriptions of the PDL on safety at work are also important, because "in that gray area" of the "long supply chains of contracts and subcontracts often lurks exploitation and unsafe work. So everything is held." When will the government stop doing just rhetoric and really work to have fair and safe jobs for all?    Here is the video to see the Democratic Party's initiative against free internships   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Chiara Gribaudo (@chiara.gribaudo)   L'articolo Abolition of free internships: the battle of the Democratic Party in Parliament proviene da Partito democratico.
