Medical cannabis: the current situation is not good for anyone, but prohibition cannot be a solution Although the UN Committee on Drugs classified cannabis and cannabis resin as medicinally used drugs in December 2020, the Hungarian authorities have recently started to ban cannabis oil products marketed in Hungary.

According to the LMP, it is not necessary to ban medical cannabis, but to help its medicinal use and to support domestic research on cannabis. In Hungary, oils with an increased content of cannabidiol (CBD) belong to the category of unauthorised new foods under the current legislation, but in recent years they have been marketed and purchased in Hungary thanks to grey legislation. This helped tens of thousands of Hungarian patients, although the uncertain legal environment was not reassuring for distributors or patients. As a growing body of scientific evidence demonstrates that CBD and medical cannabis can help alleviate, among other things, the pain of cancer patients, the treatment of people with epilepsy, anxiety and the treatment of neurological diseases, it is clear that the current grey area situation of CBD oils should be addressed not by prohibition, but by appropriate regulation and support for research into the medicinal effects of cannabidiol-containing oils. LMP agrees with Miklós Szelestei, President of the Hungarian Medical Cannabis Association, that a cannabis programme would be needed in Hungary that would ensure, under medical management and control, that cannabis products and medicinal products are manufactured in Hungary and that patients are provided with these products under controlled conditions within the social security system.
