"The international community cannot look the other way and must ensure that democracy is restored in Bolivia and the physical integrity of all the leaders of the MAS, the people of Bolivia, as well as the achievement of a guaranteed election is ensured.

The Spanish government must play a key role at the moment and strongly condemn the coup d'état and its main players.  Right now there is a clear risk that violence will go further. Therefore, it is necessary to send a clear message that it will not tolerate any kind of violence with MAS members or the population".11 November 2019The worst forecasts on the situation in Bolivia were confirmed yesterday. After the Recognition by the Bolivian Government of the Audit of the OAS and the call for new elections, with the guarantee of the replacement of the Supreme Electoral Court, the army came into play demanding that Evo Morales be completely resigned. At the moment the situation is critical, and the President, as well as other members of the Bolivian government, are looking to leave the country as their security is not guaranteed. Since Podemos, we have been denouncing in recent weeks that what was happening in Bolivia was not just citizen protests but an opposition operation to overthrow the legitimate government of the MAS by force. Yesterday, this presumption was confirmed: we are facing a coup d'état, with the army forcing the President to resign and persecuting the most relevant members of the Government. She has done so in alliance with the Bolivian far right, who was never concerned with the analysis of the electoral procedure, but in overthrowing Evo Morales at all costs. Faced with this situation, the international community cannot look the other way and must ensure that in Bolivia democracy is restored and the physical integrity of all the leaders of the MAS, the people of Bolivia, are ensured, in addition to achieving choices with guarantees. In this context, we welcome the communiqué of the Puebla Group supporting the legitimacy of the Bolivian process and hope that the countries that make up this political space can play an important role in resolving the Bolivian crisis. We believe that the Spanish government needs to play a key role and strongly condemn the coup d'état and its main players. It must also be actively involved to ensure the stability and security of the people and civil society in Bolivia, as well as the physical integrity of Evo Morales, Alvaro García Linera, and other MAS leaders, including the offering of asylum political issues to them. Right now there is a clear risk that violence will go further. Therefore, it is necessary to send a clear message that it will not tolerate violence against MAS members or the population. Our country has to be an asset on the side of democracy and human rights in the region, even when it means putting values and principles ahead of the economic interests of business elites. Evo Morales and his Government have already made history, in their country and in Latin America. The social, economic and inclusion outcomes of indigenous communities in the Bolivian system achieved by President Morales have brought about a change that will be very difficult to reverse. It is precisely these achievements that are pursued by a brutally racist opposition, which puts the Bible ahead of the Constitution and which is ready for massacre and dictatorship so as not to lose the privileges it still retains. For this reason, from Podemos we will work to ensure the safety and integrity of the leaders of the MAS and the population of Bolivia and that the victories of the Bolivian people achieved in the last two decades are maintained.
