The central representation of the interests of the statutory health and care insurance funds in Germany, the GKV-Spitzenverband, has presented its Annual Report 2020. Federal Executive Board member Joachim Kuhs, MEP and member of the Budget and Budgetary Control Committee in the EU Parliament, commented: "Due to the high additional costs that the 'corona measures' of the Federal Government have caused for the GKV, the GKV has recorded a budget hole for the year 2021 of around 16 billion euros. For the year 2022, the GKV Spitzenverband even expects a shortfall of 19.9 to 21.6 billion euros. This sum corresponds to the purchase price of 782,183 VW Golf of the 8 series. It is to be feared that each contributor will have to bear a significant part of these new costs. The additional contribution is expected to increase so much that it will hurt the contributors. The Federal Government is largely responsible for the additional costs in the GKV. It would be an undue hardship to impose these additional costs solely on the fee payer. That is why the Federal Government must relieve the GKV accordingly at this point."
