On Thursday, August 6, 2020, at around 4 a.m., a police officer on duty at le Mans police station died on duty, the victim of a drunk driver.

This police officer was a father of three. First of all, I extend my deepest condolences to the family of this police officer and his loved ones. I then reiterate all the support I give to the police and, more generally, to all the internal security forces in our country. I know how difficult their missions are and their actions are not always recognized as they should be. Yet, in the context of growing insecurity in France, more than ever the Nation needs the police, the gendarmes, and all those who, at the risk of their lives, give themselves without counting in the service of our fellow citizens. Far from the media spotlight and bombastic speeches, this police officer who was acting as part of a daily rescue police mission has, once again, fallen victim to a repeat offender with whom, I hope, the Justice will be relentless this time. This new tragedy is a reminder that strong measures to restore security in our country are needed, including:- The implementation of a true zero-tolerance policy and the actual application of sentences- The restoration of minimum sentences, especially for any offences affecting law enforcement and firefighters.- The creation of an additional 40,000 prison places.- A comprehensive budgetary programming plan to strengthen law enforcement in equipment materials and training.
