Carlos Peixoto, a Social Democrat deputy, reiterates that the PSD is open to discuss the topic of regionalization, "without filters, no prejudices and no dogmas".

In a speech on Wednesday in Parliament, the vice-president of the PSD parliamentary group understands that the debate on the regionalisation process should merit an "extended reflection" on civil society, involving intercity communities, metropolitan assemblies and universities. In this context, Carlos Peixoto points out that all parliamentary groups should analyze the "independent technical committee report and realize that some very important notes and indications have there to enable us all to legislate on what is basic." Criticising the stance of communist and blocist Deputies, Carlos Peixoto stresses that it is necessary for the Portuguese to know what is at stake. "This is the original sin of your projects. First, the Portuguese have to realize what regionalization they want for. What are the competences and attributions of regional bodies, how they will be elected, what are the sources of funding, what is the geographical clipping of these regions. (...) It was precisely because of this nonsense that, in 1998, the referendum was led to regionalization, because the Portuguese were asked before a question without knowing anything about what was behind," he said. Carlos Peixoto points out that "the PSD is not expressing any pro or against regionalization position, because first it wants to make this debate, whether to listen, wants to think and only then wants to act". The deputy therefore emphasizes that "the PSD will not agree with any regionalization process that only serves, or serves primarily, to increase state spending, to favor partisan clientelismors or to distribute some little places". "If it's for that, don't count on us. Count on us to think first and act later, we don't want to build the house through the roof," he said.
