Any compromise to satisfy autocratic leaders must always be rejectedHungary and Poland have put a veto on one of the pillars of the new multi-annual budget of the European Union.

Due to today’s veto it was not possible to ratify the agreement on the entire budget, which also includes the so-called Recovery Fund.Hungary and Poland opposed the new law which will in principle allow the European Union to issue EU securities to be placed on the stock market and thus finance the Recovery Fund and other important parts of the new multi-annual budget of the EU, valid between 2021 and 2027.The current situation is the effect of the ongoing attempt to negotiate with the nationalist right, and that shows once again something that the European Left has been reporting over the years. Autocratic and right-wing positions are not compatible with solidarity. The conservative forces in Europe thought they could barter with Hungary and Poland the rights of migrants in exchange for an easing of nationalist positions, and the result is that we now have a veto on rights that were considered as inviolable.The European Left strongly condemns the attempt from the Polish and Hungarian governments to put in place unacceptable strategies aimed at undermining the road to a recovery deal for the fight against the Covid-19, but also any compromise to satisfy autocratic leaders who are ready to threat EU citizen right in order to conserve their power.Heinz Bierbaum, President of the Party of the European Left*** FR ***La Hongrie et la Pologne ont mis leur veto sur l’un des piliers du nouveau budget pluriannuel de l’Union européenne. En raison du veto d’aujourd’hui, il n’a pas été possible de ratifier l’accord sur l’ensemble du budget, qui comprend également le “Recovery Fund”.La Hongrie et la Pologne se sont opposées à la nouvelle loi qui permettra à l’Union Européenne d’émettre des titres de l’UE à placer sur le marché boursier et donc de financer le Fonds de relance et d’autres parties importantes du nouveau budget pluriannuel de l’UE, valable entre 2021 et 2027.La situation actuelle est l’effet de la tentative de négociation en cours avec la droite nationaliste, et cela montre une fois de plus quelque chose que le PGE a rapporté au fil des ans. Les positions autocratique et de droite ne sont pas compatibles avec la solidarité. Les forces conservatrices en Europe ont cru pouvoir échanger avec la Hongrie et la Pologne les droits des migrants en échange d’un assouplissement des positions nationalistes, et le résultat est que nous avons maintenant un droit de veto sur des droits qui étaient considérés comme inviolables.Le PGE condamne fermement la tentative des gouvernements polonais et hongrois de mettre en place des stratégies inacceptables visant à saper la route vers un accord de relance de la lutte contre la Covid-19, mais aussi tout compromis visant à satisfaire les dirigeants autocratiques qui sont prêts à menacer le droits des citoyens européens afin de conserver leur pouvoir.Heinz Bierbaum, President of the Party of the European Left
