Heinz Bierbaum, the President of the EL, comments on their outstanding win:“Sinn Féin emerged as the largest party in the 90-seat Northern Ireland Assembly after Thursday’s election in a historic breakthrough. It Is leading the polls after support fell for the loyalist Democratic Unionist Party, which has been the largest party for the last two decades. It will give Sinn Fein the post of first minister in the Belfast government for the first time.“Sinn Féin led a great campaign focusing on investment in the welfare state, health care, affordable housing, and taxation of the rich. Sinn Féin’s win also means growing support for Irish unity which marks a historic shift. Therefore the prospect of Sinn Féin taking the lead in both parts of the island of Ireland has alarmed London. It increases the likelihood of a border poll, which Sinn Féin is aiming for. Heinz Bierbaum, le Président du PGE, commente cette victoire historique :“Le Sinn Féin est devenu le plus grand parti de l’Assemblée d’Irlande du Nord, qui compte 90 sièges, après les élections de jeudi, lors d’une percée historique. Il est en tête des sondages après la chute du soutien au parti unioniste démocratique loyaliste, qui a été le plus grand parti au cours des deux dernières décennies. Le Sinn Féin obtiendra ainsi, pour la première fois, le poste de premier ministre au sein du gouvernement de Belfast.“Le Sinn Féin a mené une excellente campagne axée sur l’investissement dans l’État-providence, les soins de santé, le logement abordable et la taxation des riches. La victoire du Sinn Féin signifie également un soutien croissant à l’unité irlandaise, ce qui marque un tournant historique. La perspective de voir le Sinn Féin prendre la tête dans les deux parties de l’île d’Irlande a donc alarmé Londres. Elle augmente la probabilité d’un scrutin frontalier, que le Sinn Féin vise.
